Solo Traveller

The idea of solo traveling used to scare the bejesus out of me! Nobody to co-decide things with and share decisions. Now though, I feel excited and confident. I know there are friendly faces hosting our Locations and maybe even another likeminded camper or two. I also know I can check out our listing and feel confident about what to expect when I arrive and I can choose just how wild I am going for the night using our wildness rating. I chose a range of Locations offering slightly different camping experiences to get a feel for how varied our camping trips can be. From Farms and Woodlands to Fishing and Craft.

Learn from your surroundings

No matter the Location you choose there is so much to learn from your surroundings and talking to the Location Provider. Even a short conversation with the owners or passers by can give really interesting insight to how the land is managed and to the connections with nature and habitats. I ended up driving a combine harvester and sitting in the cab learning all about it after a short chat with a neighbouring farmer.  What an amazing experience!

Sometimes just observing your surroundings can teach you a lot about the place. I learned so much about the different types of soil and the drainage for growing grazing for the animals as well as how the deadwood in the woodlands is so vital as habitats firstly and then plays a huge part in the eco system as it breaks down and new growth and life spring from it. As well as finding out about the Location you are camping on, our Location Providers are full of knowledge of the local area so can point you in the direction of beautiful walks, historic sites, or if you’re a beach lover like me, stunning local beaches. Here are a few of the places I visited while on my travels.

Thornwick Bay - Chalk & Limestone cliffs, smugglers coves and sea birds surrounding a sandy beach

Hawnby Hill - Gorgous views over the North Yorkshire Moors

The Ringing Singing Tree in Lancashire.

The Ringing Singing Tree is a sculpture made out of stacked steel pipes that create a singing sound when the wind passes through them.

South Stack Lighthouse, Anglesey
