Weekly Campfire Cooking Recipes

Easy Campfire Chilli

This hearty chilli is perfect for cooking on a camping trip—simple ingredients, minimal fuss, and plenty of flavour.

You’ll need:

  • 500g minced beef (or vegetarian mince)
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 red pepper, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 1 tin chopped tomatoes
  • 1 tin kidney beans, drained
  • 1 tbsp tomato purée
  • 2 tsp mild chilli powder (more if you like it hot!)
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Olive oil

Method:

  1. Heat a splash of olive oil in a large pot over your campfire or camping stove. Add the onion, pepper, and garlic, and fry until softened.
  2. Add the minced beef and cook until browned all over.
  3. Stir in the chilli powder and cumin, then add the tomato purée, chopped tomatoes, and kidney beans.
  4. Season with salt and pepper. Let the chilli simmer gently for 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water if it gets too thick.
  5. Serve hot in bowls, with crusty bread or over rice if you have it. To keep it simple we like it with nachos. Enjoy under the stars!

Michelle out and about visiting Locations

I recently packed up my car and waved goodbye to the family, heading off to spend a couple of weeks traveling around visiting some of our Locations, mostly around Yorkshire because I had never been there before, but also through Lancashire and across to North Wales.

It was a tough choice deciding where to go with so many areas and hundreds of Locations to choose from but I do plan to do a lot more visits and explore the surrounding areas.  Let me know if you have an event planned or would just like to share your beautiful spot and I’d love to join you.

Check back daily to read about each of my visits below by clicking the picture

We would love to hear about your camping trips over the summer.

Send them and any photos to hello@nearlywildcamping.org and we can share them with other members.

NWC Members Group on Facebook

Our NWC Members Group on Facebook is growing! We’ve been sharing camp photos and tales of experiences we’ve had at some of our Locations around the country. It’s a great place to meet like minded campers and also get & give any tips and advice for heading out to do what we all love – Camping!

Citizen Science

Citizen Science is the practice of public participation and collaboration in scientific research to increase scientific knowledge.

Through citizen science, people share and contribute to data monitoring and collection programs.

We had Mike King talking about Citizen Science in Nature on one of our Winter Zoom Talks, where he mentioned some of the great Apps that are used to collect this data and at the same time can help you learn more about your findings.  Click the link below to see a few of the Apps mentioned, then download them and get started when you head out camping and enjoying nature.

Becoming a NWC Volunteer

Call for Nearly Wild Camping volunteers

You may know that Nearly Wild Camping has a group of volunteers who help with some of our activities. Following the excellent response to the recent questionnaire and other offers of help we are keen to expand this group of volunteers.  Some of the main roles of NWC volunteers are to:

    • Help with producing content – photos, etc
    • Supporting on stands at events or giving talks
    • Hosting informal club socials or supporting members new to camping
    • Helping find and support new locations
    • Becoming a representative for your area
    • Board members

Everyone is different, so we will discuss the exact mix of tasks with you to suit your skills and interest.

Getting more involved can be very rewarding, expand your own skills, build your social networks and of course, we will give support and other benefits to those who get more involved.

If you would like to get more involved volunteering with us, please contact hello@nearlywildcamping.org
