In this talk, Rupert took us through his methods for making cider and other beverages. Science is about practical skills. This is one of the things that drew him to the subject in the first place; it has the privilege of being the most practical of the core subjects taught in school.
In this talk, Steve chatted with Neil about his work, his approaches to nature writing, observing nature while walking and wild camping, and his thoughts for Nearly Wild Campers wanting to gain more from their trips outdoors.
In this demonstration and talk Lucy, from The Wild Cooke, told us about and demonstrated some of her cooking and foraging fun recipes. Lucy is a self-taught wild food enthusiast who is passionate about using foraged ingredients in her everyday life. Lucy loves to introduce others to the delicious tastes and excitement of ScotlandÔÇÖs natural larder.
The 2023 Nearly Wild Camping Club AGM was held on December 10th.
Along with the formalities, Steve Evison, our founder and Chair, outlined some of the clubs activities during the past year, plus a little on future plans.
Brian, a Deputy Team Leader with the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team, along with some of the other team members, demonstrated some of the equipment which they use, explaining what it is used for and how it works. Brian also answered a wide variety of questions put to him by the audience, about the team, how they work and advice on being safe on the hills.

Pete from ProAdventure talked and demonstrated some equipment, giving us a real flavour of the range that they carry, whilst giving important insights into the environmental impact of the different equipment. We were able to discuss the pros and cons of different materials, approaches to manufacture and distribution, and the kit itself.

In this online demonstration, Graeme and Rachel from Carbon Farmers introduced us to the ÔÇÿTawi StoveÔÇÖ, which they explain is a more environmentally ethical way to cook outdoors.┬á
Graeme and Rachel took us through the uses, design and science of the ÔÇÿTawi StoveÔÇÖ, which, as well as using a comparatively small amount of wood as fuel, produces ÔÇÿBioCharÔÇÖ as a byproduct.

Jim Langley from┬áNatureÔÇÖs Work gave the first in the 2023 Winter Series of Online Talks and Presentations, telling us about the different habitats and the plants we might find while out on some of our Nearly Wild Camping trips and adventures. These habitats and plants range from the high mountains down to sea level.

How many of us can say we have cooked Asian fusion foods with local foraged ingredients from the Welsh hills! Tara took us on a fascinating and educational journey into Indian food, explaining some of the meanings and attributes of the foods, the spices and the social aspects too.
LetÔÇÖs be honest, if I asked many of the members if they fancied doing some science for their weekend break, I am sure many of them would look at me like I was off another planet. However, thatÔÇÖs exactly what we did with Rupert Loch on our most recent themed social camp and it was extremely successful!
Lizzy worked with our Members to make a basket from willow and a wooden base,┬ábow drill fire making! After this, though, Lizzy also introduced us to a fascinating range of other fire lighting methods which used a variety of ÔÇÿsourcesÔÇÖ including sunlight, pressure and friction.
At a beautiful Nearly Wild location in Shropshire, Dave Watson helped our Members making whistles, lighting fires with a bow drill, took a guided walk round the land with the landowner, making nettle string, bird identification and  more.
