Camping Cake Recipe
How to Make a Simple Cake at the Campfire.
There’s nothing quite like enjoying a freshly baked cake in the great outdoors. This campfire cake recipe is easy to prepare, requires minimal equipment, and is perfect for sharing around the fire. All you need are some basic ingredients and a campfire-safe cooking pot or Dutch oven.
Ingredients
- 200g self-raising flour
- 125g caster sugar
- 100g unsalted butter (softened)
- 2 eggs
- 120ml milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 pinch of salt
- Optional: 50g chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts
Equipment
- Mixing bowl
- Whisk or spoon
- Campfire-safe cooking pot or Dutch oven with lid
- Baking paper (optional, for easier clean-up)
- Gloves or tongs for handling hot pots
Method
- Prepare the Cake Batter
- In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until pale and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs, then add the vanilla extract and milk. Mix well.
- Gradually fold in the self-raising flour and salt. Stir until just combined.
- If using, fold in chocolate chips, dried fruit, or nuts.
- Prepare the Cooking Pot
- Line the bottom of your campfire-safe pot with baking paper for easier removal.
- Pour the cake batter into the pot and smooth the top with a spoon.
- Cook Over the Campfire
- Place the pot over hot embers, not direct flames, to avoid burning.
- Cover with the lid. If using a Dutch oven, you can place a few embers on the lid for even cooking.
- Cook for 25–45 minutes, checking occasionally. The cake is done when a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
- Rotate the pot every 10 minutes for even baking.
- Cool and Serve
- Carefully remove the pot from the heat and allow the cake to cool slightly.
- Lift the cake out using the baking paper or slice directly from the pot.
- Serve warm around the campfire, perhaps with a hot drink or a dollop of whipped cream.
Tips for Success
- Keep the heat low and steady. Too much direct flame can burn the cake.
- Covering the pot helps trap heat and bake the cake evenly.
- Try adding spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg for extra flavour.
- If you don’t have a Dutch oven, a sturdy saucepan with a tight-fitting lid will work.
- You can also mix the dry ingredients before your trip
